I must add that the lyrical writing style really helped bring the fairytale-like atmosphere to life, and I found myself so taken aback by the beauty of the writing and the way Dunn managed to put certain feelings into words so much that I feared that were I to start highlighting my favourite passages I'd end up with a fully highlighted book.Ĭannot stress enough how much I loved this!! She also plays with readers' expectations of what drives a character (i.e: The Witch) and refuses to give in to the predictable.

Dunn offers grace and tenderness even to the characters one might think she owes none to. There is a suffocating sense of loneliness creeping out of these pages. I couldn't help but believe the kind of hopelessness, disillusion and desperation propelling our protagonist onto a journey she'd never have expected for herself (but which, I, for one, loved every minute of). The world feels so lush, the characters so real and the protagonist's internal life so palpable, that I found myself diving head first into the story with no desire to come out for air. As Camille learns the truth, she's forced to choose between loyalty to those she loves and the future. To me, this is nothing short of a masterpiece and Dunn's best novel yet. But who and what is she? In a fast and furious story full of the glamour and excesses, intrigue and deception of these dangerous days, no one can be trusted, everyone is to be feared. The girl's no aristocrat, but her dark and disturbing powers means both the Royalists and the Revolutionaries want her.

But their latest rescue is not what she seems.

As the Battalion des Morts they cheat death, saving those about to meet a bloody end at the blade of Madame La Guillotine. Camille, a revolutionary's daughter, leads a band of outcasts - a runaway girl, a deserter, an aristocrat in hiding. A whirlwind of action, science and magic reveals, with a diverse cast of fearless heroines, a band of rebels like no other. The first in a dazzling, commercial, historical adventure series set in the extravagant and deadly world of the French Revolution.
